Post 03: From one writer to another
Whenever it comes to writing an essay or reading an essay, being able to connect with the reader is key. With that being said writers have their own way of trying to present their purpose such as using quotes, citing, paraphrasing to communicate to the audiences. Mike Bunn is an example and uses outside resources to seem relatable and not as formal to his readers, given when he himself had to read and would look at the reader's every word to understand the whole context of what was being said. His idea on using outside sources helps readers think as if they were the reader themselves to understand the process of how a writer wrote their paper and in return can help them write better as well.
The technique I see that Bunn uses is painting a picture for the audience by explaining when he worked at a theatre or how reading never really intrigued him, little things like this make us have some background information about the reader and how he came to writing. He also cites from his students and other professors to back up his claims, something most writers don't often do because a certain audience may not agree with using outside sources or quotes.
In my own essay I wrote my own experiences in to show some background of myself and to relate to the reader on the topic of test anxiety. I also added some outside sources consisting of facts and tips on how to control it, essentially writing an informative essay on the topic. The technique you could say I use deals with a lot of my own experiences and using facts that are straight to the point to back up my claim. I use this from looking at other essays that come at this approach as well, seeing them use facts or evidence to back up their claim made me take notes and attempt to write how they did.
So, citing techniques can come from how you analyze one's writing and if you tend to grasp on how the writer presented their essay then you're already reading like a writer.
I noticed that imagery, too! I really enjoyed it and that picture really pulled me in in the beginning. I have to admit, I wasn't excited to read an essay about writing, but that made it a lot more enjoyable for me. That combined with his prose actually made it a good read, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bunn's writing technique by sharing a little piece of his background by sharing his backstory to where he began, it really engaged the reader. As Bunn explain in his piece that many times we are taught that giving this type of information is "overboard" and too much information than a piece but as he continues to explain that giving this type of reader helps connect the reader and the author it really puts into perspective the why and how. It's definitely a technique that you have to learn and play around with to get right as many times you're going to be taught different each time.
ReplyDeleteNice, I like how you were straight to the point and yes i like how Bunn broke it down to where his audience could understand and picture what he was saying with out being confused.
